The implications of speedy trial can be dramatic and severe, since the case gets dismissed when a speedy-trial violation has occurred. This presentation will discuss the sources of “speedy trial” protection, both constitutional and statutory, and how they operate, and will address key pitfalls for the prosecutor to avoid.

Steven L. Taylor received a B.A. degree in 1983 from the University of Michigan. In 1986, he received a J.D. degree from the Ohio State University. He is a former law clerk for the Ohio Court of Appeals, Tenth Appellate District, and for Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer of the Ohio Supreme Court.
He has over 28 years of experience as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Appellate Division of the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office and has been Chief Counsel of the Appellate Division since 2003. Since 2009, he has served as the editor of the monthly case digest of the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association.
